What do you do in that kind of situation? When an American audience won't understand the reference do you think it is worth mentioning it, or do you just gloss over it?
I recently worked on a SF book that ended with an essay by another writer. It was very difficult, because it was talking about a ton of other works in detail that were unheard of outside of Japan. The publisher ended up scrapping the essay (thankfully, even though it was a painfully difficult translation) because no one would understand what they were talking about. (Actually the Japanese licensor scrapped it, saying it wasn't intended for American readers).

Actually, translation notes really depend on my client.
This one was for Yen Press, and they do add translation notes in the back, so what I did was explain a little bit about the story and the direct reference.
I try not to make it too long.
I actually did work on something where something I translated opened up a can of worms with even more translation notes.
I asked the client what they wanted to do, and since they asked for every single translation note, I did that.
Examples of those types of work is found in the FLCL booklets and the Gunbuster website.

Ah, you remembered! And yes I know Kyojin no Hoshi. How could I not when it is one of the most iconic sports manga of all time. Seeing that huge leg kick in so much manga takes me back to when I first saw the anime. For a while I wanted those iron muscle builders Hoshi-kun had to wear to build up my arm strength... But I was afraid of early elbow problems. I would think tendinitis would be a problem for him pretty early in his career but then again... Its a manga. DUH!!
And come on, I was born in San Francisco... Home of the original Kyojin :)
